Create Process Models

Creating BPMN models, given a textual description of a process, can best be practiced using a domain the modeler is familiar with. In the context of university classes, one can resort to scenarios provided below.models.

A hospital wants to establish a rating workflow for their doctors. To make the workflow reliable two different roles are assigned. The first one is a referee from the newly created quality assurance department while the second one represents the managing director of the hospital. Exercise 3: Computer Repair

The workflow of a computer repair service (CRS) can be described as follows. A customer brings in a defective computer and the CRS checks the defect and hands out a repair cost calculation back. If the customer decides that the costs are acceptable, the process continues, otherwise she takes her computer home unrepaired.

Exercise 4: Bicycle Manufacturing

A small company manufactures customized bicycles. Whenever the sales department receives an order, a new process instance is created. A member of the sales department can then reject or accept the order for a customized bike. In the former case, the process instance is finished. In the latter case, the storehouse and the engineering department are informed.

Exercise 5: Catering Service

Design the processes for a client who wants to establish an online catering service. The service should be available over the Internet and provide the options to create or change customer profiles, choose and remove goods from a shopping cart, as well as a checkout. The goods are divided into two types: cold and warm.

Exercise 6: Travel Booking

A travel agency wants to establish a booking service. The service is triggered by an incoming request and can return two different messages, either an unavailable notification or a confirmation. The business process of the service starts by first checking the request. If for certain reasons the request can only be handled manually by an employee (e.g. group travels), a sub-process for manual handling is activated.

Exercise 7: Student Project

End-of-study projects in an industrial environment are a mandatory part in the Bachelor curriculum. The students are not yet involved in the planning phase, where each research group interacts with its industry partners. As the project proposals have to be handed in to the faculty by 30 June, the research group starts planning in the beginning of June.

Exercise 8: Loan Brokerage

An agency is brokering loans from two different credit institutes. A customer fills out a loan request containing the requested amount and his current monthly income. Afterwards he gets the loan proposal with the lowest interest returned. Each financial institution has different rules for assigning loans.

Exercise 9: Order Management

In an order management scenario a buyer places an order. A supplier receives the order which contains a list of line item IDs and the cumulated price for the items. The supplier sends an order response for every line item back to the buyer. The buyer has the chance to cancel his order until he has received all responses.

Exercise 10: Loan Process

A sales force agent calls her insurance headquarters for issuing a loan request for a customer. She talks to one out of fourteen employees sitting around a conference table, who writes down the request on a piece of paper. Another employee takes this paper one floor up to the loan department, where a specialist types in the information into a computer system and checks the liability of the customer. This expert writes down the results of the liability check and hands it over to the next link in the chain: the contracting department.

Exercise 11: Claims Settlement

After an accident has occurred, the beneficiary calls an insurance agent who in turn contacts the insurance company. It can take up to three days until the notification of claim is entered and a qualified clerk is assigned the case.

The clerk checks whether the beneficiary’s policy was valid at the time of the accident. If not, the process terminates here. The next steps basically try to answer two questions: Whose insurance is obliged to pay and how much is it going to cost?

Exercise 12: Hotel Service

The Evanstonian is an upscale independent hotel. When a guest calls room service at The Evanstonian, the room-service manager takes down the order. She then submits an order ticket to the kitchen to begin preparing the food. She also gives an order to the sommelier (i.e., the wine waiter) to fetch wine from the cellar and to prepare any other alcoholic beverages.

Exercise 13: Underwriters

Whenever a company makes the decision to go public, its first task is to select the underwriters. Underwriters act as financial midwives to a new issue. Usually they play a triple role: First they provide the company with procedural and financial advice, then they buy the issue, and finally they resell it to the public.

Exercise 14: Fahrrad Kaufen (deutsch)
